The Subaru WRX writes a new chapter in its history spanning over 20 years, with the debut of the fifth generation.
After a glorious tradition in rally competitions, the Subaru WRX presents itself in a new guise, characterized by important mechanical and technological innovations. However, it is based on the usual winning “recipe” made of fun and performance, making the Japanese sports car popular and iconic.
Aesthetically, the new Subaru WRX confirms the well-known shapes and proportions of a sports sedan with a look made even more mean and gritty thanks to the generous widebody kit.
The front features the hexagonal grille with subtle LED headlights and anthracite-colored protections to contrast with the debut orange as the new body color.
Although without the rear wing of the STI, the new Subaru WRX does not disdain stylistic aggression thanks to new aerodynamic appendages and advanced wheel arches to optimize the management of air flows and stability at high speed.
The confirmed conspicuous air intake on the bonnet also contributes to the cooling of the engine.
Interior & New Technology
More substantial innovations are found in the cockpit of the new Subaru WRX, with a totally redesigned interior with the 11.6-inch touch display of the Starlink Multimedia Plus infotainment system in the center of the dashboard.
The multimedia system acts as a control center allowing the management of entertainment, vehicle settings, air conditioning, and navigation.
The intuitive infotainment can be combined with an advanced Harman Kardon audio system (optional) which includes 11 speakers and ensures a high level of sound cleaning thanks to GreenEdge and Clari-Fi technologies.
Under the hood, the 2022 Subaru WRX is equipped with a 2.4-liter turbo Boxer engine that develops 275 hp (3 hp more than before) and 350 Nm of maximum torque.
The Japanese manufacturer explains that the engine can offer more reactivity and acceleration thanks to tricks on the turbo and valves than before.
The new generation WRX has a four-wheel drive enriched by Active Torque Vectoring. It is possible to choose between the 6-speed manual and the new Subaru Performance Transmission automatic gearbox regarding gearbox.
The latter offers up to 50% faster shifting than the previous shifting with the Rev Matching function. In addition, thanks to the SI-Drive Performance Management Involvement system modes, it is possible to adjust the response of the gearbox and engine.
The new WRX has increased torsional stiffness by 28% thanks to adopting the Subaru Global Platform architecture, which also allowed the possibility of hosting new suspensions with a wider range of travel for the benefit of stability off-road routes.
On the safety front, the new Subaru WRX offers seven airbags and the EyeSight Driver Assist package (available with automatic transmission), including automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping, Automatic Emergency Steering and a predictive pre-collision system.
New GT Model
New in the range is the debut of the top-of-the-range GT set-up that characterizes the new Subaru WRX with additional driving modes, electronically controlled shock absorbers, adjustable Recaro seats, full Adas equipment, and 18-inch wheels with a dark gray finish and 245 tires.
2022 Subaru WRX Release Date
The new Subaru WRX will make its debut in the United States at the beginning of 2022, while the Japanese manufacturer has not yet announced the timing and prices for the launch on the Italian market.
