2020 Mercedes GLS 4WD Performance

2020 Mercedes GLS Review | The third generation of the Mercedes-Benz GLS combines the luxury of a classic Ace with the addition of exceptional off-road capabilities. The maximum level of equipment is complemented by a unique air suspension known from the recently introduced GLE class and a brand new 4×4 drive. The wheels also have a record size of up to 23 inches

Mercedes’s top SUVs make no compromises from the first glance. The massive body has grown in every direction and is definitely not just a few millimeters cosmetic. In length, the car stretched by 77 mm (5.207 mm), in width by 22 mm and is close to two meters (1956 mm). Wheelbase added 60mm to generous 3.135mm. Excluding the fringe Cadillac Escalade or Rolls-Royce Cullinan, it is the largest SUV you can buy on the market.

The shapes rounded slightly against its predecessor so that the car fits perfectly alongside its smaller siblings. He borrowed most of the design elements from a smaller class of GLE, with which he is close to the graphics of the taillights. Compared to its predecessor, there was a significant improvement in the drag coefficient cx, which decreased from 0.35 to 0.32. Within similarly sized SUVs is the best. Of course, there is completely diode lighting, optional Multibeam LEDs with 112 headlamps are also available on request. The legally permissible intensity of 1 lux can last for more than 650 meters.

2020 Mercedes GLS Interior Detail

The dominant feature of the driver’s workstation, as in the current Mercedes, became two widescreen displays with a diagonal of 12.3 “. Standard is also a multimedia system MBUX with excellent functioning voice commands. The sophisticated control logic is identical to the other latest Mercedes models.

The quality of the materials corresponds to the luxury segment, with softened plastics that are largely sewn with leather. Processing is at a height, small creaks notice only licked and literally. If you push on the center molding really tricks out the accents, but when driving definitely does not resonate anything, even when we suffered GLS in quite a difficult terrain.

The biggest change in the interior is the possibility of replacing the classic bench (60:40) in the second row with two separate seats. This configuration is standard in the USA. The alternative is, according to us, the most practical and luxurious version with a 40:20:40 division, which offers, after folding up the armrest 7 “tablets, which serves to control 11.6” screens suspended from the front seats. Passengers do not have to reach for them.

In addition to the electrical adjustment, heating, and ventilation, the second-row side armchairs also have a massage function that only those in the front could enjoy. The sun blinds in the doors are also electrically operated. New in the third row is the possibility of heating and independent control of air conditioning, so it can be five-zone. From the press release, you will find that these seats here are full-fledged and will allow comfortable travel of people up to 194 cm high. Yes, they are large, but instead of in front of their knees, individuals are no more than 180 cm tall. It would help to shift the middle row further, as there is still a margin in front of the knees even in the rearmost position.

Trunk Capacity

Even the full cast remains a solid luggage compartment (355 liters). In a more common five- or four-seater configuration, very large luggage (890 liters) is available. The second and third-row seats can be electrically tilted from the trunk, either individually or all at once. In this case, the maximum capacity is 2,400 liters and the loading length is 222 cm. When loading, the loading edge is lowered by 5 cm for easier loading.

2020 Mercedes GLS Engine Specs & Performance

The engine range includes a 360 kW M176 (GLS 580) petrol engine with mild hybrid technology (16kW generator with starter function), and a pair of OM 656 six-cylinder diesel engines, offering 210 kW (2020 Mercedes GLS 350d) and 243 kW respectively (GLS 400 d) – both meet Euro 6d standards. Among other things, they have a truly honest AdBlue tank – 31.7 liters. For non-European markets, there is also a gasoline six-cylinder (GLS 450) with 270 kW. All units come standard with a 9-speed automatic and all-wheel drive.

At the first meeting, we started sharply at eighty-five. Eight-cylinder four-liter has a pleasantly dense sound, it accelerates when accelerating, at a steady pace sounds cultivated deep tones. It starts pulling somewhere in 2000 min -1 and the appetite for revolutions lasts far beyond 5000 min-1. But you don’t have to worry too much, as the transmission shifts quickly and intuitively. Although in the comfort mode, perhaps to yearns speed about 1500 min -1, and consequently in need of accelerator must again be subsumed. In sport mode, where you move around mostly at least 2000 to 2500 min -1, we had with her were satisfied.

Dynamics is always sovereign, performance reserve can be felt even at higher speeds. Despite the considerable weight (2,545 kg), the acceleration to a hundred takes only 5.3 seconds. 13-14 l / 100 km, which is a good result given the conditions.

The second engine we had the chance to test was the stronger diesel version of the GLS 400 d. Like the petrol unit, it offers 700 Nm. However, full torque is available at significantly lower speeds and the gearbox makes the most of it. The engine runs quietly and pleasantly refined. Dynamically enough just right, the noticeable weight of the car (2.490 kg), but there is no denying. Although the six-cylinder pulls cordially, in steep protruding climbs (in Europe you would mostly click on serpentines) he did not want to accelerate so much. We certainly see space for a more powerful diesel. However, we were very pleasantly surprised by the fuel consumption, which was also only about 8 l/100 km on the highly rugged track.

Clutch instead of differential

The chassis has undergone a major change. Above all, all-wheel-drive no longer provides a differential, but an inter-axle clutch with a transfer. It can thus be fully flexible in torque transmission (0: 100 to 100: 0). Normally, it favors rear axle wheels to help reduce understeer as much as possible and improve cornering agility. In Lock mode, a 50:50 initial split is made, with the ratio further adjusted to suit the conditions and traction capability of each wheel.

The off-road package also offers a reduction gearbox (1: 2.93), which allows controlled conquest of heavy off-road passages, whether it needs to crawl uphill slowly or use the maximum braking force of the engine. For its inclusion, it is necessary to stop briefly, but everything is very comfortably handled by electronics. After about a second, the display in front of the driver indicates that the shift has been completed. To re-engage the normal row, simply press the appropriate button and then shift into neutral and re-engage. This can already be done while driving.

With this set, you’ll also get a set of underbody covers – under the engine is classic steel, the rest of the floor is protected by solid plastic about a centimeter thick, which is reinforced with carbon fibers. In addition, it is possible to raise the chassis up to 289 mm (up to 12 km / h) instead of 259 mm for the standard version, which, in official figures, increased wading from 500 mm to 600 mm.

The basic benefit not only for off-road driving is the active suspension of e-Active Body Control. This makes it possible to change the ground clearance for each wheel separately, and thanks to the camera, the suspension characteristics can adapt to the terrain before the wheel enters. On the broken off-road we were not surprised at how 2020 Mercedes GLS was able to filter out almost everything. In addition, the system also copes perfectly with undulating roads. There are almost nobody movements, just the wheels just work underneath.

Perhaps a fun feature that will surely delight all rappers is the body swinging ability, by quickly changing ground clearance on individual wheels. The purpose, however, is not to entertain, but to sweep the car for example when stuck in sand or deep snow. It is basically a more sophisticated function of fast forward and reverses movement, which the driver has to do otherwise. The advantage of individually varying the ground clearance of each wheel is that the system can put pressure on the right wheels in the situation to provide better traction.

In addition, Curve mode can be switched on when driving on normal roads, eliminating cornering. Even by tilting the car on the other side, it can disrupt the centrifugal force – giving the impression of a tilted turn. It works impressively, but somewhat unnaturally, so when driving more dynamically, we prefer the classic sports mode. Intelligent air suspension works in 48V mains and is available at an additional cost.

Airmatic air suspension is standard. It offers a classic swinging style in comfortable mode and a pleasantly dynamic setting in the sports. However, it does not cope well with uneven surfaces. There was no room on the roads to assess comfort.

We did not find any mistakes on the new Mercedes-Benz GLS during the first rides, we could only imagine the offer of the classic five-seater version as the third row does not give us much sense for comfortable traveling. We were pleasantly surprised by the terrain abilities and great suspension of e-Active Body Contol.
