Mazda presented the 2020 Mazda 3. The C-segment compact born in 2003 has reached the 4th generation . The 5-door hatchback has not gone unnoticed along the beaches of the Portuguese coast thanks to the new silhouette. The interiors are also captivating, with clean lines and minimalist consoles. And the revolutionary Skyactiv-X engine is coming under the bonnet.

The Japanese hatchback is ready to challenge the German premium compacts. From the aesthetic point of view, in the most ‘pushed out’, the Mazda3 is indeed seductive and sufficiently aggressive to be able to challenge the noble competition. The dimensions have not changed compared to the ancestor, except in height: the new version is lower than 20 mm, demonstrating the most hazardous layout.

The 2020 Mazda 3 is born in a good family. Over the past 16 years, over 6 million units have been sold worldwide. The C segment is certainly not as fashionable as that of SUVs, crossovers or city cars. In 2017, the market weight was 8.3% with 165,000 units. In 2018 it fell to a percentage of 7.0% and to 140,000 units. In this sector diesel engines dominate and half of the market is covered by private customers.

2020 Mazda 3 Design

In addition to the hatchback 5-door 2-volume model, the Mazda3 is also produced in a 3-volume sedan configuration. The latter has a more elegant and traditionalist design, but will not be available on the market. Mazda3 in our country will be only compact, probably the version that best suits the lines of Kodo design Mazda. The 2020 Mazda 3 is, in fact, a car designed in Japan, but able to find wide support also in Europe, in a market where design is the first criterion for customer choice.

The sloping front, the thin headlights with round headlights, the radiator grille that recalls the wings of the brand, the reduced space between wheel and wheel arch and the sturdy C-pillar represent the most evocative elements of the bodywork. The 2020 Mazda 3 expands to the rear giving the idea of being a car well planted on the ground and projected forward. The reflections and the play of light on the sides are supported by the colors: Soul Red Crystal Metallic and the new Polymetal Gray Metallic. The circles are 16 ”, and the 18 ” ones are the basic ones: a ‘must’ for a car of this level.

At the wheel, you feel an unusual feeling of minimalist order, under the banner of ‘ less is more ‘ typical of Mazda. The interior lines of the door and the bridge are interwoven without interruption. The 8.8 “middle screen is not touched, to avoid distractions to the driver, and is slightly drowned in the dashboard. The central tunnel is high at the feet of the console: this allows you to have everything at your fingertips, starting from the gear lever, of reduced length. Other goodies are some interior finishes of mirrored doors, the mirror of the unframed rear view mirror and the elongated and sliding armrest to access the glove compartment.

2020 Mazda 3 Security & Chassis

Comfort is exceptional and, like the design, is one of the keywords of the Mazda3. The seats are designed to support the spine, so they are very enveloping. They also reduce neck injuries in the event of an impact. The standard head-up display allows the driver to keep the main information under control without taking his eyes off the road. If the look becomes less present, a camera and LEDs catch the driver’s weariness by activating a sound signal. Not surprisingly safety, thanks to ADAS systems, represents the 3rd key element of the car. The powerful Bose sound system, with 12 speakers, deserves a quote; the interior of the Mazda3 is very quiet and the basses stand out like in a recording room.

2020 Mazda 3 Engine Specs – Hybrid

The Skyactiv engine range adopts the latest generation of Mazda structural technologies and realizes the perfect harmony between driver and car (‘ Jinba Ittai ‘, according to Mazda jargon). All 2020 Mazda 3 engines are approved according to the requirements of the new WLTP / RDE test cycle.

The 24V Mild Hybrid has a new electric brake pump for optimal regeneration, reduces engine inertia for faster and more precise gear changes and ensures a better acceleration boost. Another ‘ green’ solution is the reduction of engine displacement when possible: the system automatically alternates between 2 and 4 cylinder operation.

2020 Mazda 3can be equipped with 2 units. The Skyactiv-G 2.0 petrol with 122 hp and 213 Nm of torque, or the diesel Skyactiv-D 1.8 with 116 hp and 270 Nm. Both solutions can be combined with the 6-speed manual transmission or the automatic Skyactiv-DRIVE 6 relationships. The 186 hp Skyactiv-X petrol unit will also be combined with the i-Activ AWD Mazda all-wheel drive.

The productions are 4: Evolve, Executive, Exceed and Exclusive. From the price list, the entry version is petrol, manual, Evolve, which starts from 23,200 euros. The Mazda3 ‘ top of the range’ reaches 31,500 euros: we are talking about the diesel model, with automatic transmission, in the Exclusive equipment. Until 28 February there is the Celebration Pack.

As mentioned, the design and the play of light on the body immediately catch the eye. Also appreciated the comfort and ergonomics of the driving position. The speed of the gearshift is pleasant, as is the quietness of the passenger compartment. The engines are efficient, the diesel has a smooth and powerful acceleration response, but a few more horsepower would not be spoiled: in this case, just wait for the Skyactiv-X unit. The rear pillar is very nice to see from the outside, but limits the view to those who sit on the rear seat: beauty has a price.
